As a technologist, I find this article from the Sydney Morning Herald to be quite interesting. It reports on a university study that the elderly find pricing to be a major barrier towards entering the online world.
http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/internet-costs-a-b...For someone who travels overseas frequently, I can see how that is. Internet, and especially mobile internet is cheap within our neighbouring countries, such as in Indonesia, where I had unlimited mobile internet from my phone for $5.
I believe that the Internet is an empowering tool for everyone, whether you're a small business moving into the social media world, a young student with a smartphone, or an elder who wants to use the communication tools that we take for granted.
The National Broadband Network promises faster internet speeds, giving us a fatter pipe to consume online content. Let's see how it plays out for the more marginalised members of our community.
...and perhaps there's something that we as technology leaders can do something about bridging the technology divide
