Helping young professionals succeed in work and life
We at Emergen are busily planning for some new initiatives, groups, events and other activities.
But in order for everything to be a success, we believe that is invaluable to get your feedback.
So, what is it that would make you get more involved with Emergen, both on the website and in your every day life?

While the idea of Friday drinks is a good way for people to network and meet up, usually I just want to get home on a Friday. What up organising a volunteer, community or recreational activity as an opportunity for new members and current members to engage. Eg. Paintballing day, Gardening at a aged care facility etc... Volunteers generally start conversation between themselves whilst working together.

Permalink Reply by Janine Ripper on June 30, 2011 at 7:55pm Thanks for your input Peter and Lauren. And do you want to know something? I think I feel the same way - it's getting a lot harder to go out after a long week at work, and trying to pack everything else in during the week.
Lauren - I love the idea of the volunteering activities, and I've NEVER tried paint-balling!
And Peter - I definitely love the idea of breakfasts. A bit hard for me in my current job but hopefully in the coming months I will break out of the rat race : )
I will investigate some of these suggestions with the team! If you are interested in providing further input feel free to email me at janine.ripper@gmail.com.
Thanks again.

I can see the problem with the Friday after work thing. And I'd love breakfast meetings save that I am not much of a morning person.
However, what I personally would love would be more meet ups - instead of monthly perhaps smaller fortnightly or even weekly meetings. That takes the pressure off everyone to get there on one particular night per month, if they miss one week, they came come the next week and so on.
At the monthly meetings there might be a sense of urgency - "Oh, I have to meet everyone here" and it might be better if we could get people to relax a bit more and not feel like they have to meet every single person there. Build better relationships.
And personally, I like the people I meet at the meetings and I hate the fact that I might see them once every month or two months or so. I'd love to see them more often and I'd love to meet more new people more often.
I also like the idea of having themes or activities - I think we did discuss having speakers present on skills and tips for entrepreneurs earlier. And Lauren has a point: shared experience of some sort creates relationships far quicker. However, I can't see these activities taking up a full or half the day - I'm not sure most of the people have that much time on their hands.
I do have another suggestion though. Every Sunday night, writers from all over the world get online on twitter and chat using a hashtag #writechat so that they can follow the conversation. We could create a hashtag to do the same for an online Emergen chat (#emergen) at a particular time or since this site has a built in chat room, we could all use that.
Online chatting is not a replacement for face to face networking but if we do want more networking and working out meeting times, places and activities that work for almost everyone is dicey, then online chatting might be viable.
Also, 'tis winter, 'tis cold. Wherever we do meet in the real world, I personally would love it if it was warm. ;-)

I live (don't ask why) 20mins on the train away from the city. I can't afford to attend breakfasts as I have to drop off my toddler first. But evenings or weekends are ok. Also, if there were lunch catch ups that could be good too. If we rotated the business areas that would be great. e.g. one week lunch meet up in Subi, the next week in West Perth, Perth, East Perth, Northbridge, South Perth etc. with the hope that those working in the areas can meet up.
Cheers
